Work or Hobby? The Life of an Independent Artist

Being an independent artist: is it a dream life or just ‘a bit of a hobby’?

Many people don’t understand what turning your passion into a full-time profession means. Let me take you into my world as an artist and entrepreneur.

The Misconception: "Isn't it just a hobby?"

Since embracing my work as an artist, I’ve noticed that many people find it hard to take it seriously. I often hear comments like, "You’re probably just spending your day on a hobby." While it’s true that I also work as a domestic helper in-home care, my art is unquestionably my top priority.

What the Job Entails

Being an independent artist is about much more than painting or creating. It’s a multifaceted job that involves:

Selling my work: promoting and selling art is an art form in itself.

Administration: tasks like invoicing and bookkeeping.

Marketing: managing social media, blogging, and creating videos.

Planning: organizing exhibitions and networking with other creative minds.

Many people don’t see this business side of art, but it’s a crucial part of my existence as an artist.

Creativity Knows No Office Hours

My creativity often peaks at night when I can work undisturbed, and inspiration flows at its strongest. This makes it hard to combine with a traditional 9-to-5 job. Nevertheless, I persist because I believe that hard work and staying true to yourself will eventually pay off.

The Secret to Success: Keep Believing in Yourself

When I started, many people asked, "Do you really think you’ll make it in the art world?" But for me, it’s not about becoming famous; it’s about doing what makes me happy. By believing in myself and pursuing my dreams, I see my goals slowly but surely becoming reality.

A Big Dream: Creativity Under One Roof

My partner and I share a beautiful dream: to create a place where art, music, and creativity come together. A center where you can exhibit your work, make music, attend workshops, and connect with other creative minds. A space without ego, where collaboration is key.

Currently, we’re working on a concrete business plan to make this dream come true. We’ll keep you updated on our progress through my newsletter!
